Dunkin Donuts Iced Pumpkin Macchiato

I used to not be much of a Dunkin Donuts girl. That is until my boyfriend introduced me to the dark side (that being the Chips Ahoy iced coffee - which sadly they no longer carry). Seeing all the hype online about Dunkin's offering macchiato's ... I decided to give it a try. So, on my way back to work on my lunch break I decided to pick up a large Dunkin Donuts Iced Pumpkin Macchiato.

The iced macchiato is a layered beverage which includes brewed espresso, milk (your choice of whole or skim), ice and pumpkin swirl flavoring. Personally I find the pumpkin swirl to be sweet enough that a large only needed 1 packet of sugar substitute (equal/splenda). The milk is actually flavored with the pumpkin swirl and the espresso is then layered in over the ice and milk to create that gradient effect.

Of course the moment I was given my beverage, I made sure to swirl it all together using my straw to incorporate all the flavors together. I'm not one for a bold shot of espresso without milk or sweetener involved. The macchiato itself is very good. It's got the classic boldness from the espresso, the sweet pumpkin flavor and I found the two extremes in flavors really balance themselves out.

The only cringe worthy part was the price tag. In my area, a large (after meal tax) was $4.27. Granted, it's still cheaper than going to Starbucks (which a venti would actually be smaller than Dunks version - you'd have to stretch for a trenta to compete). But in comparison to the 2 large iced I can get for 80 cents more ... I think my iced pumpkin macchiato days are going to be treated as treats and not an on the regular purchase.

According to the Dunkin Donuts website, a large beverage (made with skim milk) is 100 calories or 2 points plus values.

Detox/Cleansing Water

I whipped up a pitcher of "cleansing water" to have on hand in the refrigerator. I've seen so many people talk about the benefits of drinking water which has been infused with cucumber, lemon and mint but had never given it a shot. I was a little concerned with what it would taste like, particularly because not all infused water flavors are for everyone.

Although with this particular mixture, I found it to be very refreshing. The flavors were noticeable but they were light and crisp. There was an underlying lemon, mint and cucumber flavor without either one overpowering the other. The mixture does give the water a little bit of a tinge in shade (it's still clear, but it's a little 'murky' from the flavors flavors and pulp infusing with the water).

All you do is add sliced lemon, cucumber and mint leaves to a container, fill it with water and allow it to infuse in the refrigerator overnight.

The concoction is one of the best waters to be drinking because the added items aid in digestion and cleansing. For instance:

* Cucumber is good for re-hydration and works as an anti-inflammatory.
* Mint adds sweetness without sugar and aids in digestion.
* Lemon helps cleanse the body, aids in digestion and works on boosting the immune system.

Certainly there are health benefits to adding the items to your water but it also gives a guilt-free flavor additive to your beverage without any artificial sweeteners/dyes/ etc.

Dunkin Donuts Chips Ahoy Iced Coffee

I am a huge coffee fan ... but I am also a little bit of a coffee snob. I have a favorite local coffee shop that makes coffee from flavored beans. That is until my boyfriend turned me onto Dunkin Donuts Chips Ahoy Iced Coffee.
Initially I was hesitant because I don't really enjoy sugary syrups in my coffee (for instance, if I do get syrup in coffee it's sugar free). But I have to say, this particular coffee has completely turned my coffee world upside down. The coffee is sweetened with a syrup, but there's chocolate syrup that is squirted into the bottom of the cup - which upon first sip REALLY gives you the illusion of biting into a chocolate chip cookie.
The coffee is sweet, chocolatey, and reminiscent of a cookie. Utterly delicious and so worth the splurge in calories/points plus values. I find the flavor lasts through the entire coffee. Although I also found it can be fast lived if you don't stir it up a bit and end up drinking up the syrup and chocolate sauce before really digging into the coffee itself (considering the layers can seperate a bit). Overall this is a complete home run, game changing coffee.

A large ice coffee (without any milk or added sugar) is 200 calories or 5 points plus values. I typically order my iced coffee with a little bit of skim milk so I call the whole coffee 5 points plus values.

KeVita Sparkling Probiotic Drink - Lemon Cayenne Cleanse

Strolling through the organic/healthy food section of one of my local grocery stores, I was intrigued by some of the KeVita drinks they had available. I had tried KeVita in the past, but I wanted to give a few of the flavors I hadn't tried before a shot. Low and behold, I picked up a bottle of the KeVita Sparkling Probiotic Drink - Lemon Cayenne Cleanse.

This is a sparkling probiotic drink ... so think along the lines of sparkling water, except not as carbonated. It's got a little bubbly action to it, but nothing that'll be overwhelming if you take a big sip.  According to the brands website, the drink is "Spicy and sublime, KeVita Lemon Cayenne is lightly sweetened with stevia, and contains no added sugar. Delicious between meals, Lemon Cayenne is certified organic and non-GMO, low calorie, low glycemic, vegan, dairy and gluten free."

What I find most interesting about this drink is that depending on how you drink it (how quickly and how much you swallow at once) you really get different flavors with each drink. I found if I took a big gulp the apple cider vinegar flavor was in full force. If it was sipped slowly there was a slight sweetness to it ... like a healthier lemonade with a little bit of a maple flavor lingering in the background. There wasn't necessarily a cayenne flavor, or at least nothing remotely spicy ...it was more along the lines of lemon, maple and apple cider vinegar. I enjoyed it and found it to not be all that bad.

Bigelow Caramel & Coconut Herbal Tea

As mentioned in a previous post, when I heard Bigelow had released some Girl Scout cookie flavored teas, I was on the hunt. I specifically made a trip to my local The Christmas Tree Shop and picked up a box of the Bigelow Caramel & Coconut Herbal Tea. The tea is a tip of the hat to (my beloved) Girl Scout Samoas cookie.

I brewed a cup of tea to have as an afternoon treat and I found the flavor of the tea is very much caramel & coconut ... although I found it was missing that classic chocolate flavor that comes with samoas. IT definitely tilts a hat at Samoas cookies, but it's not a deaf ringer. The tea is flavored with classically sweeter flavors, but I don't find it to be sweet tasting  After brewing II added a packet of sweetener to it. Even with that it wasn't right ... so I added in a splash of milk and it was perfect. Typically I like my teas black, but there are a few that are an exception to the rule and this is one of them.

Overall, it was a good treat, especially in the late afternoon when my taste buds may be looking for something sweeter to snack on. The best part is it comes with no guilt and no added calories/points plus values.

Bigelow Thin Mints Herbal Tea

When I heard there were Girl Scout cookie flavored teas at my local Christmas Tree Shop I decided to make it my lunch time shopping trip. Browsing the store, I finally found the teas in the food section in a basket, buried amongst other teas. Excitedly I popped a box of the Bigelow Thin Mints Herbal Tea in my cart and headed to checkout after finishing up browsing.

I enjoy Thin Mints but admittedly, they're not my favorite Girl Scout cookie (Samoas girl!). But in the spirit of having treats that are guilt free I decided I had to give this a shot. I was so excited to try it, that I brought the tea into work and made myself an afternoon tea to help get me through the craziness that the afternoon brings.

After letting the tea steep I have to say ... this tea is absolutely amazing! One of the best "dessert" teas I have had. It's a dead ringer for thin mints ... minty, chocolatey and just fabulous. It's caffeine free, so for those who are sensitive to caffeine this would be right up your alley, especially if you're a Thin Mints fan. I added a package of artificial sweetener to cup to bring fourth a touch of sweetness and it was perfect. There are a few teas that I add milk to but this certainly wasn't one of them, the tea was perfect on its own.

As mentioned I found this at my local Christmas Tree Shop, but who's to say these won't be available at most major retailers soon?

The greatest part is these are guilt free ... 0 calories/0 points plus values.

Ocean Spray Diet Cran-Lemonade

Fruit flavored lemonades are one of my favorite drinks. Admittedly, I don't have them very often because it's relatively difficult to find a diet or sugar free version in the stores. So when I accidentally stumbled upon the Ocean Spray Diet Cran-Lemonade while picking up some cranberry juice, I was psyched.

The juice itself is perfect. It's tangy (that classic lemonade tang, with a twist from the cranberry flavor). It's not a drink to leave your face puckered, because it does have a subtle sweetness to it. The two flavors balance one another off well and compliment each other. It's refreshing and a nice little beverage to have on hand to offer something different to the palate. This will undoubtedly be a beverage I have around for the summer months where all one wants is a nice, cold glass of lemonade. It'll allow me to be able to enjoy a lemonade beverage with friends/family without having guilt about how much sugar/calories are in your everyday average lemonade.

V8 Healthy Greens

When I saw that V8 had released a new line of vegetable juices I was intrigued. Intrigued most notably because they were offering a green juice variety. After searching for them for weeks on end, I finally spotted the V8 Healthy Greens at my local grocery store (that is even without having my coupon on hand!).

Since I haven't been feeling 100% as of late, I decided to crack open the juice in hopes it would live up to the hype I built up in my head. Admittedly, I find a lot of the green juices/smoothies on the market are overly sweet and can only be consumed in small quantities. That is, except some of the cold pressed juices at places like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Target which are more green tasting than overly sweet juice.

This V8 definitely falls in that more green tasting than sweet juice. It's actually, quite bitter to the point I'm not really a fan. It tastes like someone threw spinach, romaine, carrots and celery in a juicer then at the last minute decided it was too tart and popped a granny smith apple into the mix. It's bitter, not sweet at all and is really like drinking a liquified salad. Admittedly there is no added sugar or artificial ingredients, which makes this a healthier option ... but it's not tasty. Definitely, not my forte to say the least. I don't want it to go to waste, so I think I'll end up popping some into an ice cube tray and freezing, then using an ice cube or two in a smoothie mix.

Jillian Michaels Detox Water

Scanning through Pinterest one day for cleansing waters/juices I stumbled upon a recipe for Jillian Michael's Detox Water. The "ingredients" were pretty basic and it wouldn't take a whole lot of prep to whip it together so I picked up the few ingredients I needed at the grocery store and gave it a shot.

I'm typically not one for the whole "cleanse" thing, but I figured this one was pretty simple, I could still eat food and exercise as normal without any adverse effects of the cleanse.  This cleanse is more of a detox to help cleanse the body of toxins and flush the system of any excess water weight.  Since December (or nearly half of 2014) was an up and down cycle I wanted something to kind of give me a clean slate so to speak while hydrating me a bit as well.

This isn't a detox that's going to sludge weight off you, but it'll help slim your waistline by getting rid of a little extra water weight. That is as long as you continue to hydrate yourself with additional fluids (on top of the 60 oz) and eat a healthy daily diet.

The detox itself is a simple concoction of the following ingredients:
* 60 oz purified water
* 2 tablespoons lemon juice
* 1 tablespoon cranberry juice (try and find the lowest sugar/organic kind)
* 1 dandelion root tea bag (I found this in Target & in my local grocery store)

Make the tea as directed and allow the tea to cool to room temperature before adding it to a plastic container or pitcher. Mix all other ingredients together in the container.

Drink all 60 oz. of liquid each day for 7 days.

EAS Fruit Smoothie - Fruits & Super Greens

Walking through Target one day I decided that I wanted to switch up my breakfast routine. For the longest time I've been in a bit of a breakfast rut - eating some of the same foods over and over again and I started to get bored. I didn't want to go to foods like cereal, etc., because I don't find those to be very satisfying in the morning - as I try to keep my breakfast protein packed (it helps me balance my appetite during the day/night). I spotted a bag of EAS Fruit Smoothie in Fruits & Super Greens.

What got me to pick up the bag was the "18g of protein" written on the front of the bag. Picking it up, I quickly checked out the nutrition facts. Pretty good stats, moderate amount of protein (not 18g - it's only that if made with 1 cup of skim milk, but 10g) and it contained greens which I've found I enjoy having made green juice a number of times.

The bag of smoothie mix is slightly pricey - $9.99 for 11 servings, but overall it's not terrible in price when divided out over that time period. The protein powder is made of vegetable based protein - so there is no whey in it, it's main ingredient is soy protein isolate.

I have been quite enjoying this protein powder. I've made a smoothie for myself for breakfast for almost 2-weeks and it's been satisfying and filing up until lunch time. I mix the protein powder with 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk and 1/2 cup water. It could be dropped into a blender bottle and consumed that way ... but I prefer to make a smoothie out of it. I add 5-6 ice cubes to a blender, toss in a banana, add in the mixed up smoothie mixture and usually a few blueberries or 2 strawberries (if I have any on hand). I also add in a container of Greek yogurt (I've used banana, strawberry banana, coconut, mango lemonade, etc.) and it helps thicken it up a bit more while adding a good boost of extra protein to the drink. I think you could easily add some extra greens (spinach, cucumber, romaine, kale, etc.) to it without it really changing the flavor of the protein powder itself which provides good flavor.

It's satisfying, delicious and one of the best smoothies I've made in the morning because it stays nice and thick without watering down because of the added ice cubes. I'll definitely be picking up another bag to have on hand.  The only downside, which is a minor one, is the packaging. With it being a zip-lock container your hand gets covered in some powder retrieving the scoop and filling the scoop. Again, not a big deal, but I figured I'd share.

A serving is 2 scoops of powder, which is 90 calories or 2 points plus values.

Green Juice / Green Smoothie

So ...  I've launched myself into the craze that is Green juice. I've seen so many green juices being made and different varieties that it peeked my interest. Since I had been struggling I figured it would be a good way to get some vegetables and fruits in on days where I was lacking.  If I have a juice with a filling breakfast (hard boiled eggs, greek yogurt etc) I'm far more satisfied and even full-feeling at lunch time.

I simply add some fresh fruit, vegetables and green tea to my green juice and so far I've enjoyed what I've been able to concoct.  I do make big batches of these, storing them in airtight containers and even pitchers. If the mixture sits in the fridge overnight, it'll need a good few shakes in the morning to get everything reincorporated. Since I don't "juice" them (I use a blender) the pulp and fiber is still present which raises to the top of the glass/pitcher and the green tea settles to the bottom.  The mixture is essentially a "salad in a cup."

A friend of mine gave me a basic recipe and I've been using that and adding in my own swing of things.  Here's the basic recipe:

Green tea
Spinach
Grapes
Lemon
1/2 Banana
Cinnamon

I just eyeball it, blend it up and pour it into individual containers. As it sits in the fridge, the pulp does settle at the top of the drink ... but a quick shake before drinking it all gets re-incorporated. This is more along the lines of a "smoothie" than a smooth juice as there is chunks of pulp in it.

Trader Joe’s Red Cold Pressed Juice

I’ve heard a lot about the benefits of juicing … and then I’ve heard about cold pressed juices and how god they are for you.  The costs of cold pressed juices are through the roof ($9-12 a bottle and some places sell a 3-day cleanse for over $100). Truthfully, I feel $9 is a little steep for a juice I’m not even sure I’d like. Needless to say when I saw a line at Trader Joe’s I decided to give it a try. Scanning over the available varieties … I went with what I felt was the “safest” (meaning more of the ingredients I enjoyed at the time) – Trader Joe’s Red Cold Pressed Juice.

What sold me was the fact it has beets in it. I love beets… they’re one of my favorite vegetables to have all year long. But they’re also one of those vegetables that get a bad rep.  Admittedly before this point I had never really juiced. But I wanted to try something new, something healthy … so bottoms up I went.

The juice contains 1 ¼ beets, roughly ½ cucumber, 1 medium apple, 2 1/4 carrots,1/3 lb spinach, 2 inches of ginger and some celery. Unfortunately this was not a juice for me. I did not like it at all. It was too celery tasting for me to handle. The apple didn’t give it much sweetness … and the ginger was very mild in flavor.  It does have that irony beet flavor. I think your taste buds have to be trained to drink something like this to fully enjoy it.

Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness

Lately I've been toying with the idea of juicing. I figured before I went all in buying the fruits and vegetables to juice I'd buy something off the shelf to try beforehand ... just to see if it's something my taste buds agreed with. I've seen the Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness in the prepared juices section of my grocery store time and time again.

After comparing some of the available green juice options, I felt Green Goodness (I call it Green Goddess ... it wasn't until I read the label I realized I was wrong the whole time) was the best to give a whirl. The juice has apple, pineapple, mango, banana, kiwi, spinach, cucumber, green tea, garlic, broccoli, wheat grass, etc. in it. Admittedly looking at it ... it looks daunting and since I have some textural issues I wasn't sure if I'd be able to drink it.

Surprisingly so ... this is quite delicious! It's NOT thick, but it's thicker than say, your average beverage - water/soda, but it's not as thick as a smoothie ... it's kind of in between but more on the waterier side of the spectrum. What I like about this is as an introduction to green juices this is sweet. You can taste the apple, pineapple, mango ... while in the background you can taste a hint of banana and spinach. The "green" part of it is muted by the natural sweetness of the fruit and juices used.

Even though I no longer drink juice (apple, orange, etc.) I found this to be quite enjoyable. If I were to make it at home I would cut back on the sweetness but it's a foot in the 'right' direction. I plan on keeping the flavors in this juice in mind when I go out shopping to pick up some goodies to make my own green juice at home.

The 15.2 fl ounce bottle contains two 8 fl oz servings, 140 calories a serving or 4 points plus - or the whole bottle is 280 calories or 7 points plus values.

Hubert's Lemonade - Diet Strawberry Lemonade

Summer time calls for lemonade, right? Typically I rely on Crystal Light for lemonade, but when I spotted this Hubert's Diet Strawberry Lemonade part of me caved and had to have it. Truthfully, I don't like to "waste" calories/points on beverages ... but I wanted to try this, so try I did.

Admittedly, I was kind of expecting a sour, tart, possibly repulsive lemonade ... but it was actually quite delicious. The strawberry was evident, the naturally tart lemonade was there and it had a nice smooth sweetness to it. It wasn't sickeningly sweet, but moderately. I turned the bottle around to check the ingredients and was surprised to see stevia leaf as one of the ingredients. Normally ... I do not like the flavor of stevia, but this was quite good. Good enough to drink the whole bottle and refreshing enough to enjoy it.

Thirsty Thursday – Weight Watchers edition!

This is what I call my rendition of “Thirsty Thursday” (or really Thirsty Monday-Friday).  I drink like a fish (water beverages that is) and it definitely helps in keeping me equally hydrated.

Since I’ve started my job 3-weeks ago, in the morning when I head to work, I head into the office with a large ice coffee and a 23.7 ounce bottle of water. Depending on the day I bring in a 33.8 ounce flavored water OR a 23 ounce Diet Arizona iced tea. I then fill up my Weight Watchers water bottle which holds 24 ounces of water at the water bubbler.

It’s truly a beverage party in my cubical … and once my drinks are done, I then head to the water bubbler and refill my Weight Watchers mg and my plastic water bottle (which I put Crystal Light flavoring in).  This routine pretty much ensures I get in over a gallon of water a day (this being outside of what I drink at home and out of work). I find getting in a ton of water in at work is far easier Monday-Friday and Saturday-Sunday I definitely have to remind myself to drink more.

Wendy’s Frosty Alternative

This is the end result of what I call “Facebook made me do it.”

Browsing Facebook I saw a friend posted a Frosty alternative recipe. Going over the recipe I was intrigued but decided I was going to make it with a few tweaks to make it more my “style” if you will. The original recipe had really no sweetness to it (as told by the ingredients and those who tried the recipe comments).  I knew I wouldn’t enjoy it as it was originally, so I opted to tweak it a bit. I have to say, the end result came out pretty well. It’s not an exact Wendy’s frosty replica, but it’s a healthier alternative. The only thing missing was my small fry on the side.

I didn’t go into making this expect it to be creamy and smooth. It’s got the classic frosty flavor, with a hunt of banana in the background, but texture wise it’s icier (to be expected) but nonetheless it was an enjoyable treat.

Serves 1. 1 Points Plus Values.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (I used vanilla)
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp sugar free chocolate syrup
  • 1 packet Equal
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 15 ice cubes

Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth and ice is all chopped up.

Serve in your favorite glass.

Starbucks Caramel Flan Frappucino Light Blended

Those of us folks who are coffee fans have been hearing and seeing the new Caramel Flan beverage line (available in both latte and frappucino) advertised.  I’d been looking into the drink online and was interested in perhaps giving it a try one day.  That “one day” came a lot sooner when I received a complimentary drink e-mail from Starbucks for a tall Caramel Flan drink for 1-day only.

Since I am a Weight Watchers member I hopped on the Starbucks website and looked up the different versions of the drink and was very pleased to find this drink is sold in light variety – which is different from their nonfat no whip version.  According to Starbucks website the drink is described as follows: “Caramel Flan Frappuccino® Light Blended Beverage is a creamy-cool indulgence. Along with our own caramel flan flavored syrup, we add a drizzle of caramel flan sauce.”

I was sold.

While running an errand I popped into my local Starbucks and picked up my drink. I found this to be quite delicious. It’s undoubtedly caramel but there is that flan flavor lingering in the background.  It wasn’t overly sweet, actually perfectly sweetened, and was a great treat for the coffee and frappucino lover in me.

Swiss Miss Limited Edition Candy Cane Hot Cocoa

While making a quick run through the grocery store I noticed they had a display up for the new winter flavored Swiss Miss. I figured since it’s getting frigid cold out I’d get a box of Swiss Miss Limited Edition Candy Cane Hot Cocoa to try out.

My boyfriend is more of a mint flavored drink/dessert guy over me. I’m more of a peppermint hard candy girl. One night it was sooo cold I decided to boil a kettle of water and make myself a hot cocoa. Opening the package up, you wouldn’t quite be able to tell its peppermint (aside from the red and white striped marshmallows). After adding the water, I was awarded with a noticeable peppermint scent. The flavor is undoubtedly chocolate with a peppermint infused flavor in it. It’s definitely more peppermint than I’d say the marshmallows gave off. But nonetheless it tastes like Christmas.

Bolthouse Farms Holiday Nog

Egg nog! One of those beverages that I love … but I find the calories/points associated with it not even worth it … so I don’t have it. When Thanksgiving/Christmas roll around I start eyeing the egg nog selections hoping someone will invent a delicious egg nog that’s calorie/points plus friendly. Last year I tried the Silk version and it’s tasty but it’s as thin as water. Egg nog is delicious because of its flavor, but also due to that recognizable thick and creamy texture.

While at Wal-Mart I noticed they carried Bolthouse Farms Holiday Nog, so I checkd the nutrition facts label and stuck the bottle in my cart.  I’ve only tried Bolthouse Farms salad dressings, so I wasn’t entirely sure how the nog would be.  After cracking open the bottle as a late night treat, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was thicker in consistency. Very egg nog-like which was appreciated well before I even took a sip.  After I did take a drink I was sold … this is hands down the best lighter alternative to egg nog that I have had. It’s thicker, it’s creamy, it’s nutmeggy, it’s vanillay … and it’s just a party in a glass.  I’m truthfully quite floored as to how good this is so once I finish the bottle I purchased, I will gladly purchase another.

Have you ever tried a Bolthouse Farms limited edition beverage?

Gevalia Mocha Latte

I received a sample of the new Gevalia Mocha Latte k-cup “foam at home” drink.  I was intrigued by these because I am a fan of lattes, coffee and milk chocolate and this just seemed so interesting. The lattes are sold with k-cups and foam packets, so you add the foam packet to your coffee mug, put the k-cup in and brew.

The lattes are sold in three flavors: mocha latte (a creamy blend of cocoa and coffee topped with a velvety layer of froth), caramel macchiato (creamy and smooth with the indulgent flavor of caramel, made from real milk) and cappuccino (smooth, mildly sweet, with subtle roasted notes, made from real milk).

The mocha latte is truly as described – a delicious blend of coffee and cocoa. It tastes as if you brewed a cup of coffee and put half a packet of hot chocolate into it. It’s smooth, mildly sweet and a decadent late night treat or even early morning wake-me-up. I did not add any extra milk or sugar into my cup as I found it to be perfect. What I will note is that it was making this really strange crackling sound as the coffee was drizzling into the foam. Initially I thought some sort of glass was cracking in my kitchen until I realized it was coming from the cup that was brewing.  After a few stirs once my keurig was done brewing, the crackling sufficed once the powder mixture was fully incorporated. I enjoyed this quite a bit and will be picking up a box next time I spot it in stores.

Each cup is 80 calories or 2 points plus values.

QUESTION:
Have you tried any of the Gevalia foaming drinks?
