Lay's Kettle Cooked Greektown Gyro Chips

I'm a sucker for potato chips, low and behold when I finally spotted the new Lay's Do Us A Flavor potato chips on display at a local grocery store I had to pick some up. Case in point the Lay's Kettle Cooked Greektown Gyro Potato Chips.  As a person who enjoys an occasional gyro I figured why not give 'em a shot?

The chips themselves are your classic kettle cooked potato chip which are super crunchy (with an abundance of curled potato chips which are the best). Flavor wise ... these are just "okay" and rather mediocre. I found them to initially taste just like sour cream, plain sour cream. Then as I ate a few more they started to take on a flavor of tzatziki sauce (a sour cream, cucumber, garlic, olive oil and red wine vinegar sauce). Other than that mild tzatziki flavor ... there isn't much else about it. It's not flavorful and it's certainly not a sour cream and onion.

I certainly can't say these scream gyro, nor can I say they're exceptionally delicious or worth the try. They're kind of on the boring side... I'd rather pick up a bag of sour cream and onion or barbecue chips and have something that's flavorful and worthwhile. Hit or miss? Definitely a miss....

A serving, 1 oz (28g - roughly 18 chips) is 150 calories or 4 points plus values.

Lay's Cappuccino Chips

When Lay's launched their Do Us a Flavor chip selection ... the one I was most hesitant about was the Lay's Cappuccino chips. Truthfully, I refused to buy them because when they were first launched they were only available in the big bags. I wasn't going to "waste" my money by buying a big bag and having to potentially throw it in the garbage.  So when I found a smaller bag at one of my local stores for $1 I decided to pick it up and give it a shot.

Now, I'm a coffee fan. I love coffee - hot or cold. I enjoy an occasional coffee ice cream. I enjoy an occasional cappuccino here or there. But I could not wrap my head around a cappuccino flavored potato chip. They're just two worlds that should never collide.

Opening up the bag ... there's an immediate cinnamon, cappuccino scent. There's no greasy smell from the potato chips ... just coffee. Something about the combination makes me incredibly weary. The chips are covered in a slightly brownish gray flavoring coating the chip, which makes them look daunting. Like they're dirty, old potato chips.

Taking the first bite you get an immediate burst of cappuccino/coffee flavoring ... and as you chew that flavor dissipates and it tastes just chemicals. The chemical taste is more apparent if you inhale as you put the chip in your mouth. It's quite weird, odd, and makes you think "what am I eating?!" A mouth full of odor-filled chemicals. Admittedly though if you eat 2 ... the flavor kind of goes away - or perhaps your taste buds just go on strike?

I'm not a fan of these, not even a bit. I think they're the worst idea in a potato chip flavor. Just ... wrong...

Lay's Wavy Mango Salsa Potato Chips

Truthfully, I wasn't going to buy these potato chips. That is until I was shopping while hungry, saw they were on sale and figured "eh, why not?" That's when the Lay's Wavy Mango Salsa Potato Chips jumped into my shopping cart.

The chips are part of the Lay's Do Us A Flavor campaign ... and they are one of the flavors I was really questioning. I mean mango salsa potato chips? I LOVE mangoes and I love potato chips ... but the two just don't jive in my world. Mango salsa (the actual salsa) with tortilla chips, perhaps, but potato chips? I don't really know...

Opening the bag I could smell mango. Taking a bite of the chip ... all I could taste was mango. Mango, mango, mango! I ate another chip and couldn't handle anymore. They're a sweet, mango flavored chips. I've tried these chips a few times, each try only being able to handle 2 chips. I gave them a fair shot but I don't get any "salsa" flavor, I get mango ... crunchy mango potato chips. The two worlds just should have never crossed or become one. I think it's fair to say that I do not like these chips ... they're frankly disgusting.

If you're brave enough a serving is 1 ounce (roughly 15 chips), which is 150 calories or 4 points plus values.

Lay's Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese Potato Chips

Earlier this year, Lay's was requesting their potato chip enthusiasts to submit potato chip flavors they'd like to enjoy with their Do Us A Flavor. I submitted a few myself but I was excited to see the flavor choices that were created. One of the two I purchased, I decided to try the Lay's Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese first.

Opening the bag you can really smell the smokey flavor that bacon would give off. Popping one in your mouth you can definitely taste the cheddar and a lingering smokey flavor. You don't necessarily taste bacon, but you are given the essence of smokey bacon in each bite.  The cheddar is there - sometime bolder on one chip over another, but if you're eating one after another it sort of mutes itself out and the smokey flavor is at the forefront.

I wouldn't say you get the effect of eating mac and cheese having these chips ... but they are definitely a cheddar bacon deliciousness. I do enjoy a good cheddar potato chip and this is perfect.  The chips were fresh and crunchy and there was an abundance of those perfectly folded rounded potato chips that I love so much.  The one downside ... these are terribly addicting.

Even though this is the first of the four flavors I tried ... this is definitely one of my favorite Lay's flavors and this will be getting my vote!

Lay’s Air Pops Sour Cream & Onion

I first spotted the Lay’s Air Pops Sour Cream & Onion chips at CVS when running in to pick up a prescription. The chips weren’t marked, so I didn’t pick them up – but when I spotted them at the grocery store I decided to give them a shot.

At first it was nice to see Lay’s come out with a healthier alternative to potato chips. Sure they have a line of baked potato chips, but if you’re a snacker, you’ve seen brands come out with similar products.  Looking at the bag, I thought they’d be the Lay’s version of Pop Chips – but upon opening them, I found they are rather a cross between Pop Chips and Kellogg’s Cracker Chips. They’re as thick as Pop Chips, but their light and airy like the cracker chips. They have the classic Lay’s sour cream and onion flavoring.

The chips are sold in three flavors: original, barbecue (which I also purchased) and sour cream and onion.

A serving size is 1 ounce – roughly 19 crisps.  A serving is 3 points plus values.  The bag itself only contains 3 servings, so if you went a little heavy handed into the bag and lost track and ate them all – the whole bag is 10 points plus.

QUESTION:
Have you tried the Lay’s Air Pops?

Lay’s Cheesy Garlic Bread Potato Chips

These Lay’s Cheesy Garlic Bread potato chips are one of the last limited edition flavors offered by Lays as part of their “Vote to Save your Fave” campaign which originally began by regular potato chip lovers to submit a flavor of potato chip that they’d love were on the market.  I purchased all 3 bags (Sriracha, Chicken and Waffles and Cheesy Garlic Bread).  I opened the Sriracha first, then the Chicken and Waffles and saved the Cheesy Garlic Bread for last because I had high hopes.  But unfortunately it wasn’t as spectacular as I had dreamed it up in my mind.  I LOVE cheese and I absolutely love garlic (I put it in everything).  Unfortunately the flavor was a bit subdued for my liking.  It wasn’t as cheesy or as garlicy as I would have imagined it would be.  It tastes decent, but it’s not as power packing as I had wished for.  The cheesy eliminate takes a bit of a backseat while the garlic is evident, but it’s not a bold garlic – it’s a very mild flavor on your palette.  They are good – but I think the Sriracha flavor is ultimately the BEST and I hope it wins because I’d like to have those as a side to a plain jane sandwich any day!

Points Plus wise a serving will cost you 4 PPV.

Lay’s Limited Edition – Chicken & Waffles Potato Chips

I picked these up a few weeks ago when they first hit the shelves and I had been waiting to try them – or rather they were hidden away in my closet because I didn’t want to over indulge on potato chips since potato chips are sometimes a trigger food for me.  I knew going into it that these had a lot of mixed reviews – some people loved them while others were completely repulsed.  Then there are the folks who are at the middle of the road and don’t know what way they want to turn.

In case you are not aware Lay’s had a competition for fans to come up with their ideal chip flavor and after some hefty choices Lay’s went with Sriracha, Cheesy Garlic Bread and Chicken & Waffles.  I had tried the Sriracha and completely loved them – so next up was this particular flavor.

I have to say looking at them – they look like a browner colored BBQ chip.  The first bite was “Oh, this is weird…” second bite “Okay… this taste like breakfast.”  All I can get from these is a strong breakfast taste – like syrup and maybe even a hint of French toast (if that even makes sense).  These definitely aren’t something I can eat a whole lot of.  I’m not crazy about them and I wouldn’t say run out and pick up a bag.

My boyfriend on the other hand – I let him try one (or rather I held it out to him and was like “TRY THIS!”) was immediately repulsed, spit it out AND went and washed his mouth out LOL.

Points Plus wise – 4 for a serving.

Have you tried any of the limited edition Lay’s potato chip flavors? If so, what’s your favorite?
