evol. Scramble Cups - Chicken Apple Sausage, Egg White with Potato & Cheese

When the new evol products launched I got an email from Hungry Girl giving a heads up on the products availability on Target shelves. Needless to say, when I spotted them I opted to pick up a couple - one of the cups I picked up was the evol. Scramble Cups - Chicken Apple Sausage, Egg White with Potato and Cheese. I brought it to work and popped it in the freezer to have on hand in case I needed a suitable option at work.

That opportunity rolled around one afternoon when I needed something to eat. The packaging describes the dish as a chicken apple sausage scramble with egg white, potato and cheese. I figured it'd be a suitable breakfast alternative. I popped the cup in the microwave, following the directions on the label and it was done in no time.

Peering into the cup, it's a little disappointing (meaning you can make something a little heartier on your own) but for a convenience food it's not bad. It's a mixture of egg whites, potatoes, cheese, sausage crumbles and chives. One thing I noticed when I took it out of the microwave was that it had a very strong chive/onion smell. That smell transformed into a very strong chive/onion flavor as well ... it's almost overwhelmingly so. I felt like the potato, cheese and egg whites were at the forefront, but the chicken apple sausage really had to be sought after. I added some hot sauce and a little ketchup to it and found it to be not so bad but I wouldn't stretch to say I'd definitely pick it up again. It was okay, but not delicious or worth my buck to re-stock the freezer.

Weight Watchers Chicken Burgers

I feel like it's been ages since Weight Watchers launched frozen chicken products in local grocery stores. I remember when they first launched I was excited to give them a try. I've since purchased a few packages of the Weight Watchers Chicken Burgers (note: these are now sold in resealable plastic zipper top bags). One afternoon I pulled the box out of the freezer and cooked the chicken burgers up as part of a quick "meal prep" to have some cooked protein on hand.

The packaging used to be in big bulky boxes, with an inner package containing the frozen chicken burgers/chicken strips. But I've seen slimmer packaging (like plastic bag containers) in the local grocery stores these days, which definitely makes storing a lot easier and less spacious.

The burgers are formed and ready to be cooked. I chose to cook them on top of the stove, seasoning one side with some hamburger seasoning. They cooked up easily and were quite satisfying. The chicken remained moist without drying out and were flavorful.  Adding a little ketchup, mustard, onion, lettuce and tomato to a sandwich I definitely didn't miss the beef. These were one of the better frozen chicken burgers I have tried out on the market. The best part is these are readily available in my area to be purchased, unlike some other brands.

Trader Joe's Speculoos Cookie Butter Cheesecake

I purchased this Trader Joe's Speculoos Cookie Butter Cheesecake in December and popped it into the freezer. The idea was to have it around the holidays ... but with all the craziness that comes with the holiday hustle and bustle the cheesecake sat in the freezer untouched. For Easter I decided to opt out of making a dessert and serving this up to my family.

The cheesecake is sold frozen and the directions state to defrost in the refrigerator or defrost at room temperature. The defrost times vary depending on the method you choose. This is your classic cheesecake, with a unique twist - added cookie butter on top. The crust if a crumbly, yet firm graham cracker crust, the cheesecake layer is smooth and creamy and the cookie butter smeared on top gives the whole dish a sweet, ginger snap flavor. It is sweet, but not as sweet as say a turtle cheesecake.  A single serving of cheesecake is definitely enough to satisfy ones sweet tooth.

Overall it was a smash hit for our holiday dessert - everyone that had a piece was equally pleased with how scrumptious is was.

Just in case you are a little bummed this isn't sold in stores at the present time, have no fear, Trader Joe's has mini bite versions of this available in the freezer section. They're basically the same thing, just cut into square miniature bites instead of served as a whole cheesecake.

Trader Joe's Meatless Corn Dogs

After I tried the Trader Joe's Turkey Corn Dogs I swore off the whole corn dog experience (at least from Trader Joe's). That is until I saw a friend on Instagram post about the Trader Joe's Meatless Corn Dogs. I figured I typically like frozen vegetarian corn dogs better than the meat variety ... so I opted to pick up a box to give a whirl.

The other night I was so unsure as to what I wanted for dinner. I stood in front of the freezer scanning my potential options and I decided to give the corn dogs a shot. I popped them into the oven and let them bake. When done, the crust on the outside was nicely crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside (perfection!). Biting into the "hot dog" I found the texture to be softer and mushier than that of a real hot dog. It wasn't a displeasing texture, but it's certainly a little different.

As a "meat eater" I can say if you served these to a crowd, no one would truly know they're vegetarian, they'd just know the texture of the hot dog inside was a little softer than your average hot dog. I find with vegetarian corn dogs they are all made differently and the filling is always made up slightly different so not one is the same as another. Regardless, I found them to be pretty good with a drizzle of mustard and ketchup over them.

They were filling (I served them alongside some french fries and a green salad) and flavorful. I'd definitely repurchase these again.

Vitalicious VitaEgg Turkey Sausage

I was sent a package containing a box of Vitalicious VitaEgg Turkey Sausage Sandwiches and I was quite intrigued to try them. I tend to sway away from pre-made breakfast items, preferring to make my own, but these were so good nutrition fact/points plus value wise that I was intrigued.

Heating the sandwiches up is a breeze, simply unwrap the sandwich from the plastic wrap, wrap it up in a paper towel and pop it in the microwave to cook per packaging directions. When done, I added some hot sauce to the sandwich and a squirt of ketchup and found it to be satisfying. This is one of the sandwiches that does not have cheese on it. I enjoy cheese on my breakfast sandwiches and didn't miss the absence of it

The texture is better than the texture of the vegetarian sausage sandwich which I had tried previously. This is more along the lines of what one would assume a microwaveable breakfast sandwich would be. The egg is decent in texture and doesn't dry out after a trip through the microwave. While the sausage has the classic sausage texture without being too chewy or hard. The only downside is it is a little plainer in flavor, which is why a little hot sauce, sriracha, salsa or even ketchup go a long way.

Vitalicious Veggie Sausage VitaEgg sandwich

I was sent a package of Vitalicious Veggie Sausage VitaEgg Sandwiches for review purposes. I was intrigued to see a vegetarian option with a vegetarian meat on it instead of just a plain egg.

I popped the sandwich in the microwave (wrapped in a paper towel) and cooked it per the directions on the box. When done, the sandwich came out in pretty good shape. The sandwich didn't dry out after cooking through, which I find sometimes happens with frozen breakfast dishes that have to be wrapped in paper towel.

The texture of the sandwich wasn't quite what I'd expect. Since it's made on a flat bread, the bread is soft without any bite to it, and the sausage and egg is also soft. So instead of the sandwich having a little bit of resistance when you bit into it, it was very soft in texture. Not disgustingly soft, but soft and it took a second to get used to. The sandwich is filling and satisfying, but it is plainer on the flavor scale. I found a little hot sauce and ketchup helped make it more palatable.

I enjoyed having these on hand for convenience meals, especially when I didn't have a whole lot of time to make something, or if I needed something quick and easy.

Trader Joe's Zucchini Fries

Browsing the frozen foods section, I spotted and picked up a bag of the Trader Joe's Zucchini Fries. Initially they reminded me of a vegetable tempora ... while also a substitute for the normal french fries that could accompany any dish. I wasn't sure how they would fare since I know zucchini is one of the fussier squashes.

The bag describes the side dish as grilled and lightly battered zucchini. I sprayed some non-stick cooking spray on a baking sheet, added the zucchini fries, gave them another little spritz and popped them into the oven per the cooking instructions. A little more than halfway through, I turned the zucchini fries over and returned them back into the oven to finish off. Truthfully, at that point I was hesitant, the fries were kind of flimsy and not looking extremely promising. But I pushed those thoughts aside and let them finish baking off.

The end result turned out a lot better than imagined. The fries had enough time to crisp up making the outside batter crunchy and leaving the zucchini inside soft and moist. The fries did not dry out and for the most part the fries were firm enough to stand up on their own without falling limp when picked up off a plate. They were mild in flavor, being that of just zucchini and a slight batter on the outside of them. I enjoyed mine with a little sprinkle of salt over them, while I dipped them into a little reduced sugar ketchup. Overall I found them to be incredibly delicious ... whereas my mother who also had some alongside her dinner was as equally pleased with them as I was. Definitely a 2 thumbs up food find!

Trader Joe's Scallion Pancake (Pa jeon)

One of my favorite dishes at my local Chinese restaurant is the scallion pancake. They're mild in flavor, are crisp but soft and pair perfectly with any sort of Chinese food. Needless to say when I spotted the Trader Joe's Scallion Pancake in the freezer section, snatched up a pack, checked the nutrition facts and purchased it.
I decided to incorporate them into my New Years Eve dinner. Since I forgot to take them out of the freezer, I opted to go with browning in olive oil. I would have preferred to use the oven, but since the oven was being used I found they crisped up and heated through in little to no time.
The unique part is that these pancakes can be cooked in a number of ways. They can be set in the fridge to defrost overnight, slightly defrosted for 45 minutes or they can be cooked frozen  You can also brown them in a pan with a little olive oil while you can also cook them in the oven.

Flavor wise they're your classic scallion pancake. A plain batter with the green onion/scallion pancake running all throughout the pancake. The onion flavor is not overwhelming, it's just right. I found them to be quite satisfying ... and my niece LOVED them which says a lot if a 5 year old is enjoying them! The only difference I find in comparison to scallion pancake at a restaurant is that these are slightly thicker. But I do like the fact you can watch how much oil is used when making these at home!

Stouffer's Mac Cups - Cheeseburger Mac

Mac and cheese is one of those dishes that I just absolutely love. It's versatile, it's different and not many people make it the same way (even the boxed stuff). I admit I haven't been one of the biggest fans of frozen macaroni and cheese because I can find it to be bland. But I decided to live on the edge and give the Stouffers's Mac Cups - Cheeseburger Mac a shot when I spotted them in Wal-Mart.

What I liked the most was that the dish is packaged in individual microwaveable serving cups.  Each box comes with two cups and if I recall correctly, it was under $3. The box describes the dish as a "macaroni & ground beef in a tangy, 100% real cheddar cheese sauce."  I figured the burger in the mac and cheese would make it a little different ... even an ode to Hamburger Helper.

I popped mine in the microwave and let it cook as directed, when done I stirred it up and found that it was very creamy. Flavorwise it was okay, nothing fabulously amazing about it. The hamburger bits were tiny little granuals that weren't all that great. It was cheesy but lacked flavor (I added a little black pepper to it and it helped a bit). It certainly wasn't my favorite mac and cheese (which if you're wondering is Trader Joe's Low Fat Macaroni and Cheese). Overall - it was alright ... but I think if I'd venture into trying them I'd give the original a shot.

Vitalicious Veggie Sausage VitaEgg Sandwich

I was sent a box of the Vitalicious Veggie Sausage VitaEgg Sandwich to try out. Since it was the one in the line with the most protein in it (15g), I opted to have it for a convenience early morning breakfast. Truth be told, I am not a vegetarian, but I don't mind enjoying vegetarian/vegan dishes from time to time.

I followed the directions on the box, removing the sandwich from the wrapper, wrapping it in a paper towel and microwaving. When done I removed the sandwich from the microwave and allowed it to cool slightly before enjoying. I found the sandwich itself holds together well, even after having been microwaved. The egg and sausage are very soft in texture, which at first took a few bites to get used to. But overall it's nothing too bad. The bread has a firm texture so it keeps the sandwich together without falling apart.

Flavor wise I found it to be a little bland, so I pulled out my handy dandy hot sauce and reduced sugar ketchup and added a dollop of each. The addition of condiments spruced it up and brought some flavor to it which made it enjoyable. I can't say they're hands down delicious ... but they're pretty good for a convenience food to have on hand when in a pinch and something is needed quickly.

Trader Joe's Mini Beef Taco's

I have seen the Trader Joe's Mini Beef Taco's time and time again while shopping at my local Trader Joe's. I love taco's (I don't believe I know a person who doesn't) so I felt ... who couldn't love mini tacos?! I thought they'd be a great appetizer whenever guests were over or even as a meal paired with a salad and perhaps another protein.

After not having a clear idea of what to have for dinner one night I decided to pull these out of the freezer to whip up as a quick and easy dinner for a few folks. I sprayed non-stick cooking spray on a baking sheet, layered on the frozen tacos, gave them a light spritz of cooking spray and popped them into the oven per packaging directions.

Taking them out of the oven, I found the taco shells them self were crispy but not overly. The filling was hot ... and they kind of reminded me of taco (that's not to healthy) at a local fast food restaurant. Tasting them they're pretty good ... they're filled with what looks like a shredded beef mixture which has that classic taco flavor but not being spicy or bland. The taco shells provide a bit of a crunch while still maintaining a chewy quality.

They're good on their own while I also enjoyed them alongside a chopped salad with a side of salsa. They're a fun little finger food which tasty. I wouldn't say these would fill you up, but if you have decent and filling sides with them you should be good to go.

Trader Joe's Oven Ready Breaded Cod Fillets

Every once in a while I'm in the mood for fish. I'm not a seafood buff but I do like an occasional piece of fried fish. Since I don't like having fried foods very often, I typically resort to the frozen fish department in Trader Joe's to see what might be available. One afternoon I spotted the Trader Joe's Oven Ready Breaded Cod Fillets and decided to give them a shot.

Usually I go for haddock because I'm a white fish kind of gal, but since I have had fried cod in the past I figured eh, why not? The fillets are pretty decent in size and cooking is a breeze. All I do is spray a little non-stick spray in a baking pan, place my fish in the pan and top the fillets with a spray of non-stick cooking spray. I pop them into the oven and bake per package directions and once done they come out cooked to perfection with a nice crunchy crust. I definitely don't miss the extra frying with this because it gives it that nice crunch with fried fish dishes.

The fish is nice and flaky without that fish taste. It's very mild and pairs perfectly with a little homemade tartar sauce on the side.  The one downside I found was that the skin was on some fillets, which made the picky eater in me shudder and pick apart the fish - giving the skinned pieces of fish to my dogs. That alone was a downer because it would be a perfect fish dish for the picky fish eaters. Although, if you can get past the skin in a fillet here or there - these are quite good and filling.

Trader Joe's Roasted Vegetable Multi-Grain Lasagna

There are occasions where I'm in the mood for lasagna ... but I'm a bit of a lasagna snob. Growing up my mother always made homemade lasagna's so I find myself comparing lasagna's to the good ole fashioned lasagna. Most don't even come close ... but I decided to try out the Trader Joe's Roasted Vegetable Multi-Grain Lasagna because it was different. Typically my lasagna's contain some sort of meat in them ... but this seemed interesting so I gave it a shot.

I have to say ... I'm glad I did. This is one of the best frozen lasagna's I have had. A quick trip to cook in the microwave (you can also cook it in the oven if you prefer) and it comes out perfectly. The edges crisp (which is my favorite part of any lasagna), it's loaded with delicious cheese and the vegetables are chopped up nice and small which blend with the sauce and noodles. It's unique and different.

It was very satisfying paired alongside a garden salad. I found it's quite enjoyable and it will be an item to repurchase to have on hand when I'm in the lasagna mood and I don't have any frozen slices from a tray that I have made.  I shared some with my mother (who is an even bigger lasagna snob than myself) and she really enjoyed it.

Trader Joe's 'Spearean Risotto

Looking for a new side dish to jazz things up, I picked up a package of Trader Joe's 'Spearean Risotto one afternoon while picking up a few groceries. I've had risotto once, many moons ago, and since I love asparagus I figured it was going to be a unique and different side to have alongside dinner one night. That was, in fact a good thought.

The bag lists the dish as a "creamy risotto with a generous amount of savory and crisp cut asparagus spears." The dish is frozen and easily heated up in a pan over an open flame (or in the microwave if you're going for simple). The risotto and asparagus are frozen, while the creamy "sauce" is frozen in chunks which melts as the dish heats through - creating a creamy risotto dish. The asparagus isn't all tops as they appear on the bag ... it's more like stems and an occasional asparagus tip. Honestly, I like asparagus so it didn't bum me out that it wasn't all tops.

The risotto is softer in texture, the "sauce" is buttery and creamy, while the asparagus remains firm and not overcooked. Overall it was an enjoyable dish. Not overly rich in flavor but satisfying. If it were overly buttery my stomach would have probably put up the white flag and I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I did. But overall, it got two thumbs up from me and I will repurchase.

Trader Joe's Mashed Potatoes

Whenever I'm at Trader Joe's I always scope out the store - see what's new, what's unique or what seems interesting. I love mashed potatoes (or potatoes in general) so when I spotted a bag of frozen Trader Joe's Mashed Potatoes in the freezer section I was intrigued. There aren't very many instant potato brands that I enjoy (outside of Idahoan packages) but I was intrigued by this. Fresh mashed potatoes that are frozen, convenient AND portion sized?

I had the package in my freezer for some time, not quite sure what I was going to do with them. I pulled them out the other day for a side with dinner and I have to say ... these potatoes are pretty amazing.  They come frozen, shaped in little round "coin" sized balls. You can cook as little or as many as you choose depending on how much you want as a serving.

I placed all the potato balls in the bottom of a non-stick pan, added in the water as directed and let it come together over medium-high heat. I was quite pleased with the end result. Smooth, creamy, mashed potatoes that involved little effort. No potatoes to peel, chop and boil.

The bag states you can flavor them up with chicken broth, butter, or the simple water method (which is what I chose). I seasoned them with a little sea salt and black pepper and they were good to go. Delicious paired alongside some meatloaf and mixed veggies. They were so good I picked up another bag on my latest trip to Trader Joe's to have on hand for days where I feel like mashed potatoes.

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Pie Mochi Ice Cream

Admittedly, when I first saw the Trader Joe's Pumpkin Pie Mochi Ice Cream it was intriguing (because I'm a sucker for pumpkin anything) but also slightly daunting. I've tried mochi before and with texture issues I didn't enjoy the strawberry flavor. Figuring I'd give it a shot after hearing how good they were, I popped a box in my shopping cart and went home with them.

The dessert is shaped like a round ball, which has a smooth, dry -- almost play-doh feel to it. It's dusted with what looks like flour. The mochi shell is chewy in texture, slightly gummy and doesn't have much of a flavor to it. It's rather on the plain side and seems to be odd or foreign even. The ice cream inside the mochi is where it's at. It's a smooth, creamy, pumpkin pie ice cream which tastes exactly like pumpkin pie. It really packs a punch and left the pumpkin lover within satisfied. Together it's a unique and pretty delicious treat.

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Macarons

I remember seeing macarons talked about all over the place. Unfortunately they're not an item that is readily available in my area. That's where Trader Joe's steps into play because it has been the only store that I have been able to find macarons. Granted, they're not freshly made daily at a bakery ... but it's the closest to the real deal I'm going to get. I've tried the different varieties of macarons at Trader Joe's ... so needless to say when I spotted the Trader Joe's Pumpkin Macarons I was on board before I could bat a lash.

Macarons are a delicious french dessert made from meringue confection which are filled with a delicious, complimentary spread. They resemble a cookie, but are soft, slightly crisp (along the 'crust') and just all around perfection. These pumpkin macarons have that slightly crisp edge to them as all macarons tend to have ... but I found the filling in these to be a lot softer and airier than the filling in other cookies. The pumpkin filling has the consistency of say a whipped pumpkin dip - where it's pumpkin flavored, but light and airy in texture. It's not bad, but it's just different from the 'norm' so to speak.

I found the cookies to be quite delicious. Airy, soft, delicious and pumpkin packed. They're definitely not for the anti-pumpkin club but if you enjoy a good different pumpkin dessert .. these pumpkin macarons are for you. Plus there's no long baking process involved ... all you have to do is allow the cookies to defrost and whatever you don't eat goes right into the refrigerator.

Trader Joe's Chile Relleno

I enjoy Mexican food ... but I don't go out for Mexican food much at all. While shopping at Trader Joe's I typically glance over the packaged Mexican/Spanish inspired foods. One dish that I've looked at numerous times and finally decided to pick up was the Trader Joe's Chile Relleno.

The picture on the box looks very appetizing. I don't typically eat many frozen dinners just due to the sodium content (and the fact I tend to prefer to cook meals ... but convenience is nice on occasion). Since I'm the only person in my household that truly enjoys chile relleno it was just easier to have a frozen version of it.

Taking the container out of the box, I poked some holes into the plastic and popped it into the microwave for 5 minutes ... and just like that dinner was done. Allowing the dish to cool I then sat down to enjoy.

Flavor wise it was delicious- cheesy, slightly spicy and probably the closest to Mexican food I'd get before going to a restaurant. The only downside was the poblano pepper was SO tough. And by so tough I mean I had to break out a steak knife to cut it up! Some parts of the pepper weren't bad, but others were sooo difficult to chew I had to toss some in the garbage. Not sure if that's how most of these frozen poblano peppers tend to be .. or if I just got a dud ... but that fact alone was disappointing. If the pepper was "on point" I would strongly recommend the dish. I mean it is vegetarian and has a whopping 22 grams of protein in it.  Just drink a bunch of water afterwards to help flush some of the added sodium out of you.

The dish is 350 calories or 9 points plus.

Trader Joe's Mini Chicken Tamalitos

There had been a few occasions where while at Trader Joe's I eye some of the dishes in the "Mexican-flare section". Tamales, burritos, enchiladas, chile relleno, etc. I've shied away from some of them for a while just because some are high in calories and just not point comfortable for me. Then one day, I really wanted to give the Trader Joe's Mini Chicken Tamalitos a shot (partly due to a conversation I had with a fellow Instagrammer). So into the cart they went...

The box states the tamales are handmade mini white meat chicken tamales in red sauce.  According to Trader Joe's website: "They’re handmade just for us by a small, Mexican panaderĂa de tamal (that’s tamale bakery), and sized perfectly to enjoy as hors d’oeuvres. Each handmade Tamalito, wrapped in parchment paper, is made using traditional corn masa, stuffed with shredded chicken, cheese, corn, chiles and authentic Mexican seasonings, and finished with a mild red chile sauce. Did we mention they’re made by hand?"

Taking the tamales out of the freezer, there are 2 cooking options - stove top or microwave. Since I wasn't truly in the mood to cook I opted for the microwave version. Simplicity at it's finest! All I had to do was layer the tamales onto a glass dish, add in 2 tablespoons of water, cover with a damp paper towel and wrap the dish up with plastic wrap. A quick trip into the microwave and dinner was done. I did find I had to cook them a little longer because the 4-minutes did not heat all 10 tamales up enough.

Unwrapping them from the parchment paper, I was in for a nice surprise. These tamales are DELICIOUS! The corn masa is a show stealer; it's got a very smooth flavor. The filling is light and brings flavor to the dish. I did find I added a little bit of hot sauce to the top (because that's how I like my tamales) and it was fabulous.

Truthfully, looking at 4 mini tamales on a plate, it does feel slightly as if you're being gypped (I ate them on a small little "dessert plate" to trick my mind). But they are quite satisfying alongside a garden salad.

A serving, 4 tamales, is 300 calories or 8 points plus values.

Trader Joe's Authentic Belgian Waffles

Waffles are one of those foods that I enjoy, but look at as a treat. It's a dish that I have once in a while ... and oddly enough at dinner time. Time after time I've seen the Trader Joe's Authentic Belgian Waffles in the freezer section but decided to not pick them up for one reason or another. That is until I was on a mission switch up my eating ... so I brought a box home.

I don't recall having belgian waffles all that often. Perhaps as a kid when I went away with my parents and we had breakfast out at a restaurant. Although these belgian waffles are fabulous. A couple minutes in the microwave to toast them up and they come out perfectly. They've got a little crunch on the outside, but the inside is fluffy, soft and slightly chewy. I found them to be absolutely perfect with just a small drizzle of syrup over them and some fresh strawberries and blueberries. Taste wise they're "plain" but they're easily jazzed up with whatever topping you decide to put on them.

A serving is 1 waffle which is 130 calories or 3 points plus values.
