Trader Joe's Maple Chicken Breakfast Sausage

I saw this product advertised under the new products section of the Trader Joe's website. Since I like a protein to accompany my eggs I decided to give the Trader Joe's Maple Chicken Breakfast Sausage a try. Typically my sausage of choice is either chicken or turkey just because of the healthier stats.
The sausages in the package looked promising so I cooked them up one morning to enjoy along with my breakfast, but also to have prepared as part of my meal prep for a few days. The sausages cooked up perfectly in a non-stick pan, browning on each side. They are fully cooked, so you've really only got to warm them up and brown the casings to your liking.

Unlike your "traditional" precooked or frozen breakfast sausage, this product is in a casing. I found the casings bubbled up a bit and browned, but didn't get quite a sear compared to the sear you can get on other frozen breakfast sausages. Plating up my breakfast, I found the sausage was slightly tough because the casing was rather thick. Not insanely thick, but thick enough that it couldn't be easily broken in half with a plastic fork. Flavor wise it was your classic chicken sausage, which was flavored with a mild maple flavor. The sausage wasn't sweet, but it had a hint of maple flavoring in the background.
Overall, the sausages weren't terrible ... but they certainly weren't a favorite of mine.

Ocean Spray Diet Cran-Lemonade

Fruit flavored lemonades are one of my favorite drinks. Admittedly, I don't have them very often because it's relatively difficult to find a diet or sugar free version in the stores. So when I accidentally stumbled upon the Ocean Spray Diet Cran-Lemonade while picking up some cranberry juice, I was psyched.

The juice itself is perfect. It's tangy (that classic lemonade tang, with a twist from the cranberry flavor). It's not a drink to leave your face puckered, because it does have a subtle sweetness to it. The two flavors balance one another off well and compliment each other. It's refreshing and a nice little beverage to have on hand to offer something different to the palate. This will undoubtedly be a beverage I have around for the summer months where all one wants is a nice, cold glass of lemonade. It'll allow me to be able to enjoy a lemonade beverage with friends/family without having guilt about how much sugar/calories are in your everyday average lemonade.

Stouffer's Mac Cups - Cheeseburger Mac

Mac and cheese is one of those dishes that I just absolutely love. It's versatile, it's different and not many people make it the same way (even the boxed stuff). I admit I haven't been one of the biggest fans of frozen macaroni and cheese because I can find it to be bland. But I decided to live on the edge and give the Stouffers's Mac Cups - Cheeseburger Mac a shot when I spotted them in Wal-Mart.

What I liked the most was that the dish is packaged in individual microwaveable serving cups.  Each box comes with two cups and if I recall correctly, it was under $3. The box describes the dish as a "macaroni & ground beef in a tangy, 100% real cheddar cheese sauce."  I figured the burger in the mac and cheese would make it a little different ... even an ode to Hamburger Helper.

I popped mine in the microwave and let it cook as directed, when done I stirred it up and found that it was very creamy. Flavorwise it was okay, nothing fabulously amazing about it. The hamburger bits were tiny little granuals that weren't all that great. It was cheesy but lacked flavor (I added a little black pepper to it and it helped a bit). It certainly wasn't my favorite mac and cheese (which if you're wondering is Trader Joe's Low Fat Macaroni and Cheese). Overall - it was alright ... but I think if I'd venture into trying them I'd give the original a shot.

Vitalicious Veggie Sausage VitaEgg Sandwich

I was sent a box of the Vitalicious Veggie Sausage VitaEgg Sandwich to try out. Since it was the one in the line with the most protein in it (15g), I opted to have it for a convenience early morning breakfast. Truth be told, I am not a vegetarian, but I don't mind enjoying vegetarian/vegan dishes from time to time.

I followed the directions on the box, removing the sandwich from the wrapper, wrapping it in a paper towel and microwaving. When done I removed the sandwich from the microwave and allowed it to cool slightly before enjoying. I found the sandwich itself holds together well, even after having been microwaved. The egg and sausage are very soft in texture, which at first took a few bites to get used to. But overall it's nothing too bad. The bread has a firm texture so it keeps the sandwich together without falling apart.

Flavor wise I found it to be a little bland, so I pulled out my handy dandy hot sauce and reduced sugar ketchup and added a dollop of each. The addition of condiments spruced it up and brought some flavor to it which made it enjoyable. I can't say they're hands down delicious ... but they're pretty good for a convenience food to have on hand when in a pinch and something is needed quickly.

Trader Joe's Mini Cafe Twists

I had heard great things about the Trader Joe's Mini Cafe Twists so while at the store I made sure to pick up a container to give a try. I'm a huge fan of cafe twists ... there's a brand my local grocery store sells that's pretty tasty and uniquely sold in a variety of different flavors. Flavor options aside, the Trader Joe's variety is your standard cafe twist with no unique or interesting flavor categories.

The treat is dairy free containing no butter, eggs, yeast and are low sodium. There isn't much to them, the ingredients being simply unbleached wheat flour, soybean oil, palm oil, beet sugar, cinnamon and salt. If you don't have a Trader Joe's in your area, these are essentially the Barry's Bakery Original French Twists just re-packaged (which are sold in plastic containers, similar to the one pictured, or in bags).

The twists are a puff pastry dessert which is a combination of crispy, crunchy and slightly sweet with a cinnamon flavoring. The crisps are perfect on their own, or alongside a nice cup of coffee/tea. They serve the cure for crunch, sweet and a dessert ... it's a hybrid between a cookie and a dessert. I find them to be satisfying while not being something that can turn into a trigger. Even though they're described as mini the twists are pretty decent in size (about a fingers length in size, if not a tad bigger).

A serving, 4 twists, is 120 calories or 3 points plus values.

V8 Healthy Greens

When I saw that V8 had released a new line of vegetable juices I was intrigued. Intrigued most notably because they were offering a green juice variety. After searching for them for weeks on end, I finally spotted the V8 Healthy Greens at my local grocery store (that is even without having my coupon on hand!).

Since I haven't been feeling 100% as of late, I decided to crack open the juice in hopes it would live up to the hype I built up in my head. Admittedly, I find a lot of the green juices/smoothies on the market are overly sweet and can only be consumed in small quantities. That is, except some of the cold pressed juices at places like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Target which are more green tasting than overly sweet juice.

This V8 definitely falls in that more green tasting than sweet juice. It's actually, quite bitter to the point I'm not really a fan. It tastes like someone threw spinach, romaine, carrots and celery in a juicer then at the last minute decided it was too tart and popped a granny smith apple into the mix. It's bitter, not sweet at all and is really like drinking a liquified salad. Admittedly there is no added sugar or artificial ingredients, which makes this a healthier option ... but it's not tasty. Definitely, not my forte to say the least. I don't want it to go to waste, so I think I'll end up popping some into an ice cube tray and freezing, then using an ice cube or two in a smoothie mix.

Chili, Bean & Rice Stuffed Peppers

One afternoon I was watching some YouTube videos that were in my subscription feed when I stumbled upon a video from Laura Vitale. It was a recipe on her chili stuffed peppers. The dish itself looked fabulous and it was a very unique take on having stuffed peppers and even chili so I decided to give it a try. I checked over the recipe and adapted it to the way that I make my chili, only adding in some brown sugar as Laura did in her video while I decided to skip adding cheese to my stuffed peppers.  The end result was nothing other than spectacular.

So spectacular that I've actually made these twice so far. They're so good, that my somewhat picky mother has asked me to make these a few times because she enjoyed them so much when I made them the first time. The last time I made a batch, it was Superbowl Sunday and my brother was in love ... so much so he took one home. They're utterly delicious, satisfying and a total hit!

Serves 12, 1/2 stuffed pepper serving, 5 points plus per serving (you can have a whole pepper - 2 halves - for 10 points plus values)
Ingredients:
* 20 oz. lean 93% lean ground turkey (you can substitute for beef if you prefer)
* 14.5 oz canned black beans, rinsed and drained (you can substitute for whatever bean you prefer)
* 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes, slightly drained
* 32 oz canned crushed tomatoes
* 6 oz canned tomato paste
* 1 medium onion, chopped
* 6 medium bell peppers, cut in half, seeds removed
* 2 cups cooked white rice (you can substitute for brown if you prefer)
* 2/3 cup water
* 1/2 tbsp McCormick Steak Seasoning (optional)
* 3 tbsp chili powder
* 3 tsp cumin
* 1 tbsp minced garlic
* 1 tsp black pepper
* 1 tsp salt
* 1 tbsp brown sugar

Cut peppers in half and remove the seeds (leave stems if you can, it helps the peppers hold their shape and filling better). Spray a large baking dish with non-stick cooking spray and add peppers into the pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

When peppers are done, remove from the pan and drain of any liquid that sits within the pepper and return the partially cooked peppers back to the pan.

Spray a pan with high sides with non-stick cooking spray, cooking over medium-high temperature, add in ground turkey and steak seasoning and begin to crumble up with a spoon. As the meat cooks, add in the garlic and onion and cook until meat is no longer pink and onions are softened.

Add in chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper and brown sugar. Stir to combine, allowing the spices to blend with the meat and onion mixture.  Add in tomato paste and mix to combine.

Add in diced tomatoes, black beans, crushed tomatoes, and water and mix until nicely combined. Allow the mixture to simmer and thicken, coming together in roughly 15 minutes.

Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to cool for 10 minutes before adding in your cooked rice. Stirring it in to combine well to make sure the sauce covers all the rice and the mixture thickens together nicely.

Using a measuring cup, add in 1/4 cup of mixture into each pepper at a time, until all mixture is divided evenly into each halved pepper (if you end up with extra mixture, use a teaspoon and divide the mixture evenly).

Pop the stuffed peppers back into a 350* oven and allow to bake for 20 minutes. Remove peppers from oven and allow to cool 15-minutes before serving.

Trader Joe's The Bagel Spinoza Cinnamon Raisin Bagels

Every once in a while that itch for a bagel kicks in. Evidently on a quest to try different things, I picked up a package of the Trader Joe's The Bagel Spinoza Cinnamon Raisin Bagels. Cinnamon raisin isn't my first bagel of choice, but every once in a while you want want something that's got a little sweetness to it.

The bagels are your average, hearty bagel, which is in a cinnamon raisin flavor. I find they're not as sweet smelling as your "traditional" cinnamon raisin bagel, but they are tasty and satisfying all around. They have a little more of a whole wheat flavor to them, than your grocery store brand - but it's not overwhelmingly noticeable. The bagels are speckled with raisins running throughout them, which when bitten/cut into they provide a juicy raisin. The cinnamon flavor is there, but it's not overpowering on the senses.  When popped into the toaster, they crisp up perfectly, while leaving the outside to be nice and crunchy while the inside gives off a little chewiness.

They're great with a little butter on them, peanut butter or cream cheese, etc. Truthfully, I enjoy these bagels making a savory sandwich with them. Throw on a little ham and it's a perfect combination of sweet and savory. Don't knock it 'til you try it!

As I recommend with all of Trader Joe's bagels, do store these in the refrigerator. Since there isn't any preservative in the bagel, they tend to go bad fast and sometimes even before the date on the bag. I find storing in the refrigerator or even freezing and defrosting gives them a little longer of a shelf life.

Yoplait Greek 100 Calories Banana Caramel Greek Yogurt

I'm a Greek yogurt fan to the core, but there's a piece of me that has a weakness when it comes to banana flavored yogurts. If it's new and it's got banana anything in it, I'm going to buy it ... try it and either love it or hate it. Case in point a new find courtesy of Wal-Mart's refrigerator section: Yoplait Greek 100 Calories Banana Caramel Greek Yogurt.

My immediate thought was this would be similar to say a bananas foster yogurt. I was game and sold immediately. But since I have slight issues with caramel flavorings in yogurt (they can come off overwhelming, too bland or far too artificial tasting) I opted to purchase only 2 containers. Which after trying this I was kind of glad for doing so.

The yogurt is in a round about way, a big ole miss, which was disheartening. I mean, it's alright ... but nothing to light a candle against the Dannon Banana Creme yogurt.  The flavoring is a milder banana flavor with a small hint of caramel in the background. By hint, I mean, you have to really seek out the flavor otherwise it can be missed entirely.  It's okay ... it'd probably be better served over some fresh fruit with a little granola on it ... but it is not a contender as the best banana yogurt find. It's different, but I wouldn't rush out to find them again.

Dannon Oikos Triple Zero - Banana Creme

One afternoon on a quick trip though Wal-Mart to pick up a few groceries, I spotted the newly released Dannon Oikos Triple Zero yogurts. After scanning the flavors, I opted to go with my tried and true Banana Creme (truthfully, if there's a banana flavored yogurt, it'll be the first yogurt I try from any brand). I picked up only one container, and truthfully I wished I got more ... because now it seems incredibly hard to find!

There are a few high points for this yogurt. One of the first being it is enforced by the NFL and it contains 0 added sugar, artificial sweeteners or fat. What I love the most is that it's also got a whopping 15g's of protein in it! If you keep an eye on protein in foods, you'll know this is a jump of 3g's when compared to some other Greek yogurts on the market. It may not seem like a big difference, but at the end of the day it all adds up.

The yogurt is absolutely delicious. It's thick, creamy, and packed with flavor. It's not overly sweet, but the banana creme flavor was right up front and wasn't artificial tasting or 'zippy' (tangy/sour) on the tongue. It was mild, but flavorful and the yogurt was perfect. Nice and thick, without being too thick and/or watery. Truthfully, one of the better Greek yogurts I have had in a long while.  Now if only I can get my hands on some more ...

Silk Cashew Milk - Unsweetened

Many moons ago I made the switch to using almond milk in a majority of my cooking (I still use skim milk on occasion, but I typically go with non-dairy milks). Initially it was quite the venture into almond milk just due to the vast difference in taste and texture (particularly when put into ice coffee). I have always been a cashew fan, so when I heard there was a new Silk Cashew Milk - Unsweetened out I had to try it. Low and behold I spotted it at a local grocery store so I snatched up a container.

The Silk brand is my "go-to" for non-dairy milks, so to see a cashew variety I was sold from the get-go. The cashew milk is quite thick and creamy. I feel a lot creamier than your average almond milk and definitely creamer than skim milk. Whereas the flavor of the cashew milk is what sold me. It tastes very much like cashews and is hands down a winner. Clearly, if you're not a fan of cashews, then you would not be a fan of this. This is the unsweetened variety, while they also have an original version which is sweetened and is 60 calories per 1 cup serving.  According to the brands website the product is free of dairy, soy, lactose, gluten, casein, egg and MSG.

Unlike some of the other almond milks, these are not available flavored, but that doesn't mean you could not flavor your milk in the comfort of your own  home. I have used this in my oatmeal, adding a drop of vanilla extract into the bowl. It's good alongside some cereal, it's good on its own and it's also good as a milk substitute in recipes.

Jillian Michaels Detox Water

Scanning through Pinterest one day for cleansing waters/juices I stumbled upon a recipe for Jillian Michael's Detox Water. The "ingredients" were pretty basic and it wouldn't take a whole lot of prep to whip it together so I picked up the few ingredients I needed at the grocery store and gave it a shot.

I'm typically not one for the whole "cleanse" thing, but I figured this one was pretty simple, I could still eat food and exercise as normal without any adverse effects of the cleanse.  This cleanse is more of a detox to help cleanse the body of toxins and flush the system of any excess water weight.  Since December (or nearly half of 2014) was an up and down cycle I wanted something to kind of give me a clean slate so to speak while hydrating me a bit as well.

This isn't a detox that's going to sludge weight off you, but it'll help slim your waistline by getting rid of a little extra water weight. That is as long as you continue to hydrate yourself with additional fluids (on top of the 60 oz) and eat a healthy daily diet.

The detox itself is a simple concoction of the following ingredients:
* 60 oz purified water
* 2 tablespoons lemon juice
* 1 tablespoon cranberry juice (try and find the lowest sugar/organic kind)
* 1 dandelion root tea bag (I found this in Target & in my local grocery store)

Make the tea as directed and allow the tea to cool to room temperature before adding it to a plastic container or pitcher. Mix all other ingredients together in the container.

Drink all 60 oz. of liquid each day for 7 days.

Nonni's THINaddictives Blueberry Oat Almond Thins

Biscotti's are a cookie that I've loved since childhood. My mother and aunt would have them often with coffee so of course if you see those you love/idolize eating something you're prone to trying it. Of course my favorite are hard on the outside but softer/chewier in the middle (this type is from a local Italian bakery).
Of course I don't quite love super hard biscotti type cookies, but I can put up with a little crunch. The almond thins are generously filled with bits of almond, chewy blueberry bits and specks of oats. The blueberry pieces give the snack a chewy quality, while the almonds provide crunch with ample softness. They have a very mild flavor, which is very much blueberry almond, which is enjoyable.

I do enjoy these straight out of the package alongside a beverage (tea, coffee or even a cup of water). These would also be good accompanying some Greek yogurt and fruit ... a take on a yogurt parfait, where the almond thin is crumbled up and used as the granola in the dish.

A packet (which provides 3 thins) is 100 calories or 2 points plus values.

Red Velvet Oreo's

When I heard Oreo's was adding a red velvet flavor to their limited edition line-up I have to say I was very intrigued. I love red velvet cakes/cupcakes/desserts so I knew when I found them I'd be giving them a try. Low and behold on an afternoon trip to Wal-Mart I spotted the limited edition Red Velvet Oreo's and they found a little spot in my carriage and a one-way ticket to my humble abode.
One thing I noticed immediately, not about the cookies, but about the packaging is that it's 1/3 the size of a normal Oreo cookie package.  The package is much smaller and oddly enough (or not as oddly, considering this is a new 'trick of the trade') it's the same price regardless of the reduction in product. Regardless of how many cookies you get in a package (which in an odd way may actually be a good thing) ... these particular cookies are phenomenal.
The cookies themselves have that classic red velvet flavor - that rich chocolate flavor, while the cream is your classic Oreo cream which is cream cheese flavored. It's the essence of red velvet in a cookie form ... which is a total home run. I don't find them to be overly sweet and I'm able to enjoy 2 cookies without feeling the need to go overboard. All that have tried the cookies have been fans and gave them 2 thumbs up.

Arthur Paul's Birthday Cake Cake Pops

I spotted a box of Arthur Paul's Birthday Cake Pops at Wal-Mart in the freezer section and decided to pick them up. I figured it would be a special little treat when my niece and nephew came over to visit. So on Super Bowl Sunday, I took the box out of the freezer as a special little treat and they turned out to be a hit!

Admittedly, when I saw the box I assumed it might be an ice cream/cake mixture covered in frosting with jimmies on it (BTW .. by "jimmies" I mean sprinkles ... I'm from Massachusetts and that's what we call them). The cake pops themselves are packaged quite well in the box to avoid them from hitting one another and breaking apart. I had these in my deep freezer so they were quiet hard, but after letting them sit out for a few minutes they softened a tad.

The cake pops are essentially a piece of vanilla cake on a stick, covered in a frosting (which isn't overly sweet) which is encased in colorful jimmies/sprinkles. It was quite tasty, satisfying and satisfied my sweet/snacky tooth without being sickeningly sweet. Overall they were a fun little treat ... and they were adult and kid approved!

Fiber One Protein - Cookies & Creme

When I spotted the Fiber One Protein Cookies & Creme bars at Target I willingly popped a box into my cart. I am a longtime fan of cookies and creme ice cream/candy/desserts so to see it in a bar form was definitely enticing.

The bars themselves are slightly smaller than say a candy bar ... but size aside they are tasty! The flavor is definitely cookies and cream with some chocolate thrown into the mix.  Think along the lines of a cookies and cream candy bar that has milk chocolate covering it.  Very satisfactory on the palette. I know with some fiber added products, you can notice a fiber flavor ... but I have to say I didn't notice any a strong "fiber" taste to them. They were quite delightful and a yummy treat.

I admit, I try to space out fiber added foods (like Fiber One products) because they can have adverse effects on a tummy. I would not suggest to avoid them, but I would suggest spacing them out in your snacking agenda to avoid making yourself uncomfortable.

International Delight Fat Free & Sugar Free Caramel Marshmallow Creamer

I'm a coffee lover at heart and after making the switch to plain creamer in my coffee in the morning ... I felt my coffee life was getting a little boring (particularly when I made it at home or at work). While picking up a few groceries at a local grocery store I decided to try out the International Delight Fat Free & Sugar Free Caramel Marshmallow Creamer. I've heard good things about the International Delight range of fat free & sugar free creamers ... so why not?!

The creamer is exactly what the label says. It's a slightly brownish shade of creamer, which tastes just like caramel marshmallow. It's sweet, it's creamy and it gives a plain cup of coffee (iced or hot) a nice kick of caramel marshmallow sweetness. It's enjoyable, it's a perfect companion to a flavorless coffee. The only downside is I've only seen this sold in select grocery stores and it's only available in the smaller bottle (which tends to be a dollar short in price compared to the large bottles).

Overall I'd say if you like/love coffee ... and you enjoy caramel marshmallow flavors, do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle. It'll make you love your coffee life a little bit more!

Yoplait Greek 100 Calorie Whips Lemon Meringue

Ever since the Yoplait Greek 100 Calorie Whips hit the market they've been all the rage. I made a point to pick up a few of the flavors that seemed the most interesting to me. One of those was Yoplait Greek 100 Calorie Whips - Lemon Meringue. I figured this would be one of those flavors that was either hit or miss since lemon yogurts can be either really good or really bad without very much go-between.

As I've mentioned in a previous review the texture of this yogurt is a far cry from your average Greek yogurt. It's not thick, heavy, or "wet" in consistency. It's light, airy and has a mousse texture to it. It's flavored well, giving a jam packed 9 grams of protein, while also remaining light and airy at the same time. Definitely a different twist on a yogurt which can make for a refreshing dessert or snack option.

The lemon meringue flavor was dead on and exactly what one would assume it would taste like. It's definitely a smooth subtly sweet lemon flavor which had a bit of a creamy meringue flavor wrapped into it. It cured my craving for something sweet and dessert-like.

Fiber One Mint Fudge Brownies

I've been on a brownie kick as of late and I can't justify making a box of brownies and having 1/18th of a pan because the calories/points for it just aren't even worth eating it. So while waltzing through Target one day, I spotted and picked up the Fiber One Mint Fudge Brownies. Truthfully the mint part is what sold me because it would be a different flavor from the classic peanut butter brownies I have been enjoying for months.

The brownie is your classic Fiber One fudge brownie which is soft and cake like. They are decent in size for what you get. The mint flavoring is there, but it's certainly not overpowering. The fudge/mint flavors balance one another out without either one cancelling the other out.  I enjoy mint flavoring but I find with some desserts it can be too much ... and this is perfect for my taste buds. The only thing I do notice is the fact the "fiber taste" that can usually be found when eating Fiber One products isn't as evident in these as it normally is.

These are perfect straight out of the package, warmed just slightly in the microwave ... or even used as a brownie in a lightened up ice cream sundae.

Of course with this having added fiber it may upset some tummies ... so these aren't an item I'd suggest eating all the time. Unless of course the added fiber doesn't bother you.

Kellogg's Special K Brownies - Heavenly Caramel

When I spotted the Kellogg's Special K Brownies - Heavenly Caramel in the grocery store I didn't hesitate to pick up a box. I checked over the nutrition label and popped the box into my cart. On the contrary I wish I actually read the box because I would have had somewhat of an idea regarding the size of the brownies.

Taking a package out of the box, my thought immediately went to "are you for real?"  The key piece of information on the box that I missed is the fact that there were 7 brownies in the box.  Seven ... and the box isn't all that big! The individually packaged brownies are SO small ... more along the lines of a small York peppermint patty. Taking the brownie out of the packaging, they're small little thin squares which have a drizzle of chocolate over them with little caramel chips running throughout the brownie batter.

Taste wise, they're good, they give you that bit of chocolate while not truly noticing the caramel flavoring. But the fact that they're so small makes them slightly unappealing. Ideally Fiber One brownies are larger than these (roughly by 2/3's the size). Granted these aren't a loaded with fiber brownie so it won't upset any tummies. But they are small and may not necessarily cure the brownie hunger.

Overall, they're not bad ... but for the sheer size alone, I'd probably take my snacking to another route for an extra few calories/points plus values.
